Varenui began with a single belief — that the most extraordinary retreats leave the earth better than they found it.

Varenui Retreats is a sanctuary where overwater villas emerge from ancient rainforest, where every meal is grown within walking distance, and where the boundary between resort and wilderness is intentionally left undefined. We exist for those who seek beauty without compromise — in comfort, in conscience, and in connection to the living world around them.
How it began
A clearing in the forest, a vision for the future
In 2009, our founders arrived at a remote coastal headland — untouched jungle on one side, a turquoise lagoon on the other. What they saw was not a development site. It was an invitation.
Construction took three years. Every villa was positioned to protect existing tree canopies. Local craftspeople shaped the timber and stone. The first guests arrived in 2012 to find a resort that felt as though it had always belonged to the landscape.
Today, Varenui hosts fewer than forty guests at any one time — by design. We will never trade intimacy for scale.

Our 400-hectare private conservation reserve is the heart of the property. No activity, no path, no structure is approved without an ecological impact review. The forest comes first — always.

100% solar-powered operations, zero single-use plastics, and a closed-loop water system that returns purified water to the watershed. Our carbon footprint is audited annually and published in full.
Serve Deeply
Eighty percent of our team are from surrounding villages. Every role is a career pathway — we run an internal skills academy and pay above industry rates at every level. Hospitality should lift a whole community.
